Iran is not a country for mass-tourism. Many people have very negative ideas about Iran . They think Iran is filled with extremists and every Iranian is a fundamentalist. We decided to put all our prejudice aside and to see for ourselves what Iran is really like.

Well, Iran had lots of surprises for us. We knew a little bit about Iranian history, in preparation for this trip we've read something about Achaemenians, Selucids, Parthians, Sassanians, Seljuks, Mongols, Timurids and Safavids. Now we learned how the things they've left behind really looked like. But apart from old things, we discovered Iran has some interesting new things too. And who thinks Iran is nothing but sand and desert, should see the magnificent mountains, the rivers, forests and all the other marvels of nature Iran has to offer.

And finally, we discovered the Iranians are extremists, that is: extreme in friendliness
(except for the hotel staff in Esfahan).

A collection of typical Iranian things

In an Islamic country like Iran there are certain rules. For example: don't step onto someone's head when he's praying, don't shake hands or have physical contact with someone of the opposite sex, remove your shoes when visiting a mosque, always refuse twice before accepting a present, and so on.

And, you should respect the Iranian dress code. For women, this means you have to wear a head scarf at all times. This is the reason the BamJam Travel Pictures of Iran was not made by Leon & Mirjam, but by Leon and his friends Henk and Pieter. Mirjam thought she would become crazy if she had to wear a scarf for three weeks, so she stayed at home.

The three of us decided to travel with a group instead of traveling on our own, we thought we should see more this way. It is possible to do it on your own, if you have more time, have some contacts in Iran or speak a little Persian.

For your convenience, we added a Clickable Map of Iran.
