Madeira is a small island (56x19 km) in the Atlantic ocean. People who like to lay down on a sandy beach and do nothing else should not go to Madeira, a sandy beach is an unknown phenomenom on Madeira. But, if you like walking, Madeira is your paradise. Unique is the irrigation-system of the island, you will find 2150 km of irrigation canals called levadas on the island. The levadas transport the water from the North, which has almost 2 meters of rain a year, to the dry South. The maintenance-paths along the levadas will take you to places you would have never reached any other way. The trails along the levadas are almost level. Who prefers a more steep trail, can climb the mountains in the middle of the island. These mountains reach over 1,800 meters. Madeira is well known for its wine, the Madeira, and for its flowers. Thanks to the temperature and the water (transported from the north), Madeira is a real flower-paradise.. |
