GRONINGEN ON FOOT

Home Up Send email Sign guestbook View guestbook About us

The slogan 'Er gaat niets boven Groningen' has two meanings:
1: There is nothing better than Groningen,
2: Groningen is the most northern province of the Netherlands.

The second meaning is easy enough to check (and only true if you count islands without population), so we decided to go to Groningen for two weeks to check the first claim for ourselves. The Wad- en Wierdenpad, one of the Dutch Long Distance Footpaths, which lies completely in Groningen, was our main guide. We completed our holiday with some daytrips of the Naoberpad and the Pieterpad, a day of 'wadlopen' and a day on one of the Frisian Islands, Schiermonnikoog. If you want to see where we went, you can look at the Map of Groningen.

Anyway, now we can truly say: 'Er gaat niets boven Groningen'.

When you think this is absolutely everything there is in Groningen, you are wrong. We have seen lots of small villages, with robust little churches, old windmills and modern windgenerators. And we found out that it is awfully hard to give a good impression of the wide landscape with photographs. So if you liked our pictures, we can only recommend you go up north to have a look for yourself what it is really like.
